Sized to the house, not to the slab
The fastest way to install a new system is to match the size of the old one and reuse the pad it sat on. It's also how a lot of houses end up with equipment that's wrong for them. A unit that's too big for the space it's cooling cools the air fast, shuts off, and starts again a few minutes later. It never runs long enough to pull the humidity out of the house, so the thermostat says the target temperature is met while the air still feels damp and heavy. Sizing to the actual square footage, insulation and duct layout costs nothing extra and is the difference between a system that runs and one that actually works.
Matching the air handler to the condenser
A condenser and an air handler are sold in matched pairs for a reason: mismatched equipment runs inefficiently even when both halves are individually fine. We install York equipment as a dealer, and we also service all makes and models, so if a home already has a different brand's air handler in good shape, that gets weighed honestly rather than replaced for no reason. What actually moves the number
A replacement is rarely just the box on the pad.
Two homes with the same size system can land on very different totals, and it's usually one of these that explains the gap.
R-454B refrigerant
Newer systems run on the current refrigerant standard, which changes some of the equipment and handling involved compared to older units.
Plenum work
The sheet metal box the air handler connects into. It doesn't always transfer cleanly to a differently sized unit.
Drain line updates
A new coil and a new drain routing often need to meet somewhere they didn't before.
Electrical
Disconnects, breakers and whips get checked against the new equipment's actual draw, not just reused because they were there.
Thermostat and controls
A mismatched or outdated thermostat can undercut a good installation before it ever runs a full cycle.
Ductwork and line sets
Undersized or leaky ducting, and a line set that's the wrong length or diameter for the new equipment, both quietly cost performance.
